Antarctica Dream Adventure 8 – Drygalski Fjord

This is our third day at South Georgia Island in our Antarctica Dream Adventure. South Georgia is the British Overseas Territory of South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands.

As we progress on the expedition we are told that areas of South Georgia are being closed due to the detection of birds with avian influenza and to help reduce the spread of the disease. The expedition leader is constantly monitoring weather conditions at intended and possible destinations. Drygalski is a steep sided fjord with no possibility of landing, but is very picturesque.

“Iceberg Alley”

However, we are now situated in and about to travel for two days through, “Iceberg Alley”. This is largely because the waters around South Georgia Island are much warmer than those at The Peninsula, where most of the icebergs originate.

History

At Grytviken there was a lot of knowledge shared about Ernest Shackleton and his epic rescue expedition of the entire crew and staff. A focal point of the story was that the entire expedition found themselves stranded on Elephant Island with no hope of discovery so Shackleton and a few expedition members left in order to be able to effect the rescue.

We passed Elephant Island in the distance and the view was made more special with the lenticular clouds over the island.
